Music education today has a lot of problems, and chief among them is an overemphasis on memorization instead of improvisation. Study any instrument in any style other than jazz, and improve is likely to be an afterthought in favor of sight-reading and memorizing pieces that others have written and played.
There is nothing wrong with learning how to play a piece you enjoy of course, but it does not develop any of the most important and rewarding musical skills.
