The criminal law of the Commonwealth of Australia and the states and territories is based on common law principles which go back many centuries. There are three common law jurisdictions in Australia. The criminal law in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia is based on legislation which has amended the common law such as the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW) in New South Wales, the Crimes Act 1958 (Vic) in Victoria, and the Criminal Law Consolidation Act 1935 (SA) in South Australia.
