Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site

The historic Reed Gold Mine in Midland, North Carolina is the site of the first documented discovery of gold in the country. Gold was discovered in this area just east of Charlotte in 1799, fifty years before the California gold rush. The Reed Gold Mine is the only underground mine in North Carolina that is open to the public.
