For a busy artist, pastels are an ideal means of expression. Pastels are fast. The colour is very immediate because you are holding dry pigment and placing it directly on the paper. You don't even have a brush between you and the paper.
To work in pastels, you need to understand the tonal qualities in the composition, tonal arrangements and graduations of tone. Practicing in charcoal can give you added confidence when you turn back to pastels.
